In 1930, a group of sailors from the Cedar Point section of Shady Side formed an organization known as Our Own Damn Yacht Club. The OODYC held its first regatta over Labor Day weekend of that year.
In subsequent years, sailors from other areas along the shores of the West River joined and in 1933 the club's name was changed. Continued growth required more space for facilities so the West River Sailing Club was moved to its current location in Galesville.
Much has changed over the ensuing decades, but the annual Labor Day regatta continues to anchor the club's racing and cruising schedule.
