Twilight Race worth extended wait

It was touch-and-go as to whether the Shearwater Sailing Club could conduct its annual Twilight Race. Severe thunderstorms and tornado warnings put skippers on edge and the race committee wisely decided to delay the start for an hour.

The entire crew of Varmint was awaiting word at owner Michael O'Toole's home in Anchorage. They watched the storm clouds pass to the south and decided to make haste to the boat berthed on Back Creek behind Muller Marine.

"We were sitting in my living room and the skies brightened so I said, 'Now is the time. Let's go!' " O'Toole related.
