When William "Billy" Heintz and a group of sailing-minded friends from the shores of the West River decided they needed a gathering place to stage dinghy regattas, they purchased a piece of property on Cedar Point, built a clubhouse and put the name Our Own Damn Yacht Club over the door.
Three years later, the organization was renamed the West River Sailing Club and eventually moved to Galesville. For the past 79 years, it has served as a hub of high-quality dinghy racing in a wide range of one-design classes.
