City officials paved the way for the 2009 Melges 24 World Championship yesterday when they signed a lease with the Eastport Yacht Club, allowing the group to host the event, which begins Sunday and runs through Oct. 31.
The Melges 24 is a relatively new but increasingly popular class of fast lightweight yachts. Though the city is home to several prestigious regattas, Annapolis has never hosted this event.
