School board responds to secretaries' lawsuit

The county school board is asking the courts to dismiss a lawsuit filed by the school secretaries' union over a change in the way they are paid.

School officials said the change was necessary to comply with federal law. Previously, the school system had been violating the Fair Labor Standards Act, officials said in a response to a union lawsuit filed in December in county Circuit Court.

In their response, school officials said they discovered the error when they were implementing a new payroll system last year.

Under the law, the secretaries are supposed to be paid for the number of hours they work each week....
