History lesson in Bates discussion

People who turned out for a discussion on race and education at Anne Arundel Community College last night got a history lesson in a symbol that looms large in the county's African-American community: Wiley H. Bates High School.

The film premiered last night at a forum on race and education at Anne Arundel Community College.

Local leaders built the discussion around a 20-minute documentary about the beloved Annapolis school, which served black students in Anne Arundel County until integration in 1966.

I agree with Donna G - Sadly, our children don't know their history and without knowing their history, the present means nothing and the future even less. Parents MUST take the time to teach these children the history of their people. Sit down with your child and watch Roots and other historical movies so they can see exactly what their ancestors had to experience. Maybe this will make them understand just how fortunate they are.

Sometimes young people are frustrated with our talk of "how it was." I ask them to consider the program's subtitle: "Looking Back - Moving Forward." It is crucial to have a firm grasp of where one has been, historically, spiritually, culturally, personally. Moving forward becomes that much sweeter once we know the entire path.
