Published 10/13/09

Tomorrow the county's high schools will spend thousands of dollars so their freshmen, sophomores and juniors can take a preliminary college entrance exam for free.

But if past years are any indicator, about 17 percent of eligible students won't show up.

That unusually high absentee rate suggests some students are purposely dodging the test. And their absence has frustrated school officials who rely on the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test, or PSAT, to tell them which students should be taking advanced courses.

PSAT - 2009-10-18 10:12:18

When I was in high school you had to take the SAT....no questions asked. BEG & PLEAD...get real. This goes to show that kids today do not care about things and there are no consequences for them not taking it either. What will happen when this generation of students gets in the workforce...."I don't feel like doing the job I am asked to do, so I won't" Come on people...kids need to be set straight. Parents need to get a reality check and work with the kids and the schools or the current generations of kids/teens will turn out to be the generation of slackers.

Good Idea - 2009-10-14 12:29:52

Folks are always complaining about schools lacking in their programs. This seems to be a good way for the schools to assess where students are lacking and where they need to beef up the efforts.

The ones taking the test are the ones that are interested in going to college or care about what they do in school. But half of the kids that take it dont even try because they know what its all about and either arent going to college or know what they are going to do after high school. It is kind of like the ASVAB test they make you take in what 10th grade the one the military comes in and administers. I intentionally failed it and a friend of mine got the highest score in our school he was getting calls and visits from military recruiters like crazy guess how many I got "0". Kids aren't stupid stop treating them like they are. If they don't want to take it, make it optional. Besides this goal you have of more students taking advanced classes is ridiculous, kids are struggling as it is because of how our school system is to begin with. Leave it alone already.
