Horse racing: Maryland racing needs to show strides

As Maryland racing nears depression, embarrassment and a general all-around downswing, maybe the leaders and arbiters of the sport could use this time to spiff it up. You, know; streamline things; upgrade the operations; iron out the obvious wrinkles.

There are sufficient weaknesses in track operations, rules and laws to occupy real thinkers until the unhappiness of slot machines is resolved.

For instance, take the specter of Maryland racing shutting down each summer while Colonial Downs runs a meeting between Richmond and Williamsburg, Va.
