BOWIE - Last year, outfielder Nick Markakis was merely a minor-league phenom. This year, he's a proven major league hitter (.312, 14 homers, 55 RBIs) who has moved into the No. 3 spot in the Baltimore Orioles' lineup. The careers of closer Chris Ray and utility man Brandon Fahey underwent similar transformations this season. Ray pitched just 40 big-league innings last year, but has recorded 30 saves in 2006 at the back end of the Orioles' bullpen.
