Nine years ago, when Michael DeFontes walked into the Daytona International Speedway room for the driver's meeting prior to the annual 24-hour endurance race, he had to work hard to contain himself.
The then 41-year-old rookie looked around and was awed when he realized he was standing with the likes of A.J. Foyt and Mario Andretti. He knew he had arrived.
"I felt like pinching myself," recalled the Kent Island resident and realtor. "All I could think was, 'Here I am. I'm one of them.'
