BALTIMORE - The Baltimore Orioles plucked pitcher Jeremy Guthrie from baseball's scrap heap last season, signing him as a free agent and reviving his career. Now they seem determined to break his heart. Once again, Oriole hitters picked one of Guthrie's starts to take the night off. Baltimore's bats were virtually dormant in last night's 4-2 loss to the Yankees, which began about 18 hours after a wild, 10-9 victory over New York that featured 16 hits and five homers.
