Gary Helmick grew up rooting for the Baltimore Orioles and, not surprisingly, his favorite player was shortstop Cal Ripken Jr. However, the Pasadena resident is a career-long second baseman, so he also become a fan of Roberto Alomar and later Brian Roberts.

Gary Helmick signed a free agent contract with the Orioles last week and will report to Rookie League affiliate Bluefield this weekend.

The Towson University graduate, who was not selected in this month's Major League Baseball Amateur Draft, received a $1,000 signing bonus.
