To no one's surprise, seniors Greivis Vasquez and Landon Milbourne were two of the top scorers in the Maryland basketball team's first intrasquad scrimmage yesterday. After all, Vasquez and Milbourne were the top two point-producers for the Terrapins last season. Vasquez, who considered entering the NBA Draft before opting to stay for his senior season, scored 25 points and handed out nine assists on the afternoon. Milbourne added 18 points, a team-high 11 rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
The other two players that finished among the top four in scoring yesterday were unexpected. Sophomore guard Sean Mosley was second to Vasquez with 21 points, hitting 8 of 14 shots, including a pair of 3-pointers. Mosley also grabbed 10 rebounds. Freshman James Padgett was also a pleasant surprise, scoring 17 points and grabbing seven rebounds. Padgett shot 7-for-13 from the floor and showed a knack for finishing plays close to the basket.
Guard Adrian Bowie and forward Dino Gregory, both of whom saw significant minutes last season, added 16 points each.
Maryland is scheduleld to hold a second scrimmage at Comcast Center next Saturday at 1 p.m. The Terps will play their lone exhibition game on Nov. 3 against Indiana, Pa., then open the regular season at home on Nov. 13 against Charleston Southern.
SPEEDSKATING: Chad Hedrick got back at rival Shani Davis, setting a new track record to win the 1,500 meters at the U.S. speedskating trials.
After losing to Davis by two-hundredths of a second in the 5,000, Hedrick won the shorter event in 1 minute, 44.47 seconds. He beat Davis' record at the Pettit National Ice Center by one-hundredth of a second. Davis took second in 1:44.49.
Three-time Olympian Jennifer Rodriguez easily won the 1,500 in 1:58.45, more than 1½ seconds ahead of runner-up Jilleanne Rookard.
AUTO RACING: ESPN broadcaster Bob Griese apologized at the end of yesterday's Ohio State-Minnesota football game for a remark he made about NASCAR driver Juan Pablo Montoya.
Earlier in the telecast, during a promotion for coverage of NASCAR's Chase for the championship, a graphic listed the top five drivers in the points race. Fellow analyst Chris Spielman asked where was Montoya, who is Colombian. Griese replied that he was "out having a taco."
As the telecast was wrapping up, Griese, the Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Miami Dolphins quarterback, apologized for the remark and said that Montoya is one of the best drivers in NASCAR.
Brad Keselowski held off points leader Kyle Busch on the final lap to win the Kroger On Track For the Cure 250 in a green-white-checker finish in yesterday's Nationwide Series race at Memphis Motorsports Park.
PRO SOCCER: Claudio Lopez's penalty kick in second-half stoppage time salvaged a 2-2 tie for the Kansas City Wizards against D.C. United last night.
The draw effectively ended United's playoff hopes in the regular-season finale for both teams.
Julius James' header in the 82nd minute gave United a 2-1 lead, but D.C. midfielder Fred drew a handball and automatic red card for using his arm to block Roger Espinoza's shot on the goal line in the second minute of extra time.
HORSE RACING: Vineyard Haven won the Frank J. De Francis Memorial Dash over a sloppy track at Laurel Park, the colt's first win in more than a year.
Ridden by Alan Garcia, the 3-year-old Vineyard Haven found running room on the inside and took the lead in deep stretch Saturday to win by a half length over Ravalo.
The winning time for the six-furlong, Grade 1 race was 1:09.62. Vineyard Haven paid $3.60 on a $2 win bet.
Vineyard Haven, who won two Grade 1 races last year, was the 4-5 favorite in the eight-horse field. Fleet Valid was third, followed by Sacred Journey, Ah Day, Peace Chant, Roaring Lion and True Quality.
