NAVY VOLLEYBALL: Clutch plays down the stretch allowed the Navy volleyball team to record a four-set victory over Army on Friday night at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Midshipmen topped the Black Knights, who entered the match with a 10-0 record in the Patriot League, by scores of 26-24, 25-20, 21-25, 25-20 before an overflow crowd of nearly 600 fans.

Yesterday, 24 attack errors and a hitting percentage of .034 cost the Navy volleyball team in a three-set loss to Holy Cross, Saturday afternoon at the Wesley A. Brown Field House in Annapolis. The Crusaders picked up their second win of the year over the Mids with the 25-16, 25-19, 25-11 decision.

Meghan Carpenter and Abbie Merkl both tallied seven kills to lead the Navy offense on the afternoon. Megan Lynch posted 15 kills to lead Holy Cross.

NAVY ICE HOCKEY: Navy's ice hockey team took another positive step towards becoming a good hockey team Friday night, battling No. 6 ranked Penn State dead even most of the way before eventually falling, 6-4, to the Nittany Lions in an Eastern States Collegiate Hockey League game at the McMullen Hockey Arena.

The Midshipmen are 4-10-1 overall and 0-6-1 in the ESCHL, while the Nittany Lions are 8-1-1 and 3-0-1.

NAVY RIFLE: The Navy rifle team showed improvement, but fell by a mere five points to Army in yesterday's President's Trophy. The Mids tallied a five-person score of 5784 to place second to Army's 5789. Air Force was third at 5781. Coast Guard's score was not available at time of press.

Navy's four-person NCAA Qualifying score in smallbore was 2290. Chris Burleson led the Mids with a 577. Liz Leckie scored a 575, Kenan Wang tallied a 573 and Ryan Williams netted a 565. Alison Lankes also contributed to the scoring team with a 577.

NAVY MEN'S SOCCER: Lafayette scored three goals in the game's first 38 minutes and cruised home in the second half, handing the Navy men's soccer team a 3-0 setback in the 2009 season finale for the Midshipmen. Navy ends the season with an 8-11-0 overall record and finished Patriot League play with a 2-5-0 mark.

NAVY WATER POLO: The No. 12 Mids advanced to the finals of the CWPA Southern Division championship with a pair of impressive wins on Saturday. The two victories improve Navy's record to 19-8 overall.

In the first game, a 19-1 victory over Washington & Jefferson, Navy was paced by Arny Warren and Stevie Ray with three goals each and Matt Carlson with a pair.

In the second game, the Mids defeated Johns Hopkins, 12-9. The two teams were tied at three after one quarter, but Navy surged ahead 6-4 at halftime. Navy pushed the lead to 10-5 after three quarters.

NAVY SQUASH: No. 14 Navy posted 9-0 victories against 23rd-ranked Denison, 41st-ranked Kenyon and 26th-ranked Northwestern on Friday and Saturday at the Denison Tournament, improving to 6-0.

The Midshipmen won 81 of their 85 individual games over the two days, highlighted by three three-game sweeps by five of their own.

NAVY WRESTLING: Highlighted by Glenn Shober's individual title at 149 pounds, Navy's wrestling team had six of its own finish among the top four competitors in their respective weight classes to kick off the season at the Eastern Michigan Open on Saturday in Bowen Field House.

Shober, who finished sixth at last year's Eastern Michigan Open at 157 pounds, won the 149-pound title with a perfect 5-0 record on the day.

NAVY HOCKEY: Navy surrendered three goals within six minutes in the third period en route to a 5-1 loss to Penn State.

HOPKINS FOOTBALL: The Centennial Conference's top offense and defense collided on Homewood Field, with the top defense seizing the day. Johns Hopkins' defense held Franklin & Marshall in check, while the Jays' (7-2, 6-1 CC) offense rode Andrew Kase to a 51-13 win over the Diplomats (7-2, 5-2).

Hopkins' defense took the ball two times, stopped F&M on fourth down four times, , and ended three Diplomat drives deep in Hopkins' territory. F&M was limited to 259 yards of offense, 116.5 yards below its season average of 375.5. Meanwhile, Johns Hopkins piled up 507 yards.

SALISBURY FOOTBALL: Sophomore defensive back Ricky Cassidy (South River) collected a career-high 11 tackles and sophomore slot back Bryan Woolson rushed for a game-high 72 yards, but it was not enough as the Sea Gulls dropped a 59-14 decision to No. 17 Hampden-Sydney College.

Salisbury (4-5, 1-1 Atlantic Central Football Conference) found itself in a deep hole to begin the game as Hampden-Sydney (9-0, 4-0 ODAC) posted the first five scores to take a commanding 31-0 lead. Despite the scoring margin, the Sea Gulls were not fazed as they opened up the second quarter with a pair of touchdowns.

MCDANIEL FOOTBALL: Nick DeLuca converted three field goals, including the game-winning 20-yarder as time expired to lift McDaniel to a 22-20 victory over Gettysburg.

The Green Terror (5-4, 3-4 CC) built a 13-0 lead before the Bullets (3-6) scored 20 of the game's next 26 points to take a one-point lead with four minutes to play.

DeLuca, however, capped a 14-play march that covered 54 yards with a 20-yard field goal from the left hash to send McDaniel to its second straight road victory and first win in Gettysburg since 2001.

ST. MARY'S CROSS COUNTRY: The St. Mary's men's cross country team fared well in its first-ever Capital Athletic Conference Championship meet hosted by Hood College at Heritage Farm Park.

The Seahawks finished fourth in the team standings while University of Mary Washington captured the program's 11th men's team title, snapping defending champion, Salisbury University's, four-year hold. Senior Frank DeVar of Mary Washington nabbed his second consecutive individual title, crossing the finish line in 25:23.66, to be named CAC Runner of the Year for the second season in a row.

HOPKINS FIELD HOCKEY: Johns Hopkins outscored Gettysburg 4-1 in the first half, then held off a second-half Bullet rally, making a save with no time left as the 17th-rankedBlue Jays defeated the 14th-ranked Bullets 4-3.

SALISBURY FIELD HOCKEY: The No. 2 ranked Sea Gulls captured its 15th consecutive Capital Athletic Conference Championship title, defeating Mary Washington by a margin of 2-1. Salisbury has not lost a conference championship since 1995. The victory marks the 10th straight win of the season for the Sea Gulls.

Salisbury (16-1, 6-0 CAC) dominated the game, outshooting Mary Washington 16-1. The Sea Gulls also had a staggering 21 penalty corner opportunities, compared to the Eagles' two; eight of those corners came in the first nine minutes of play. The match was a highly physical one, as the teams committed a combined 154 fouls.

SALISBURY CROSS COUNTRY: The Salisbury teams traveled to Heritage Farm Park in Walkersville to compete in the Capital Athletic Conference championships. The women's team claimed its second consecutive CAC Championship, while the men's program took second place.

MARYLAND WRESTLING: The 10th-ranked Terrapins opened their 2009-10 season in dominant fashion, winning a pair of matches against Drexel and York.

The Terrapins (2-0) opened the day with a 35-6 victory against Drexel (1-1) and returned shortly after with a 57-0 shutout of York (0-2) that lasted less than 45 minutes and featured eight pins.

STEVENSON MEN'S SOCCER: Brett Sauerberger scored his second goal of the season and the second of the game for York (Pa.), which proved to be the game-winner as the Spartans held off a late rally by Stevenson en route to a 2-1 victory and the Capital Athletic Conference title.

STEVENSON WOMEN'S SOCCER: For the second-straight year, the Stevenson women's soccer team suffered a shootout defeat at home in the Capital Athletic Conference women's soccer championship. Mary Washington won its 13th CAC title after edging the Mustangs 4-2 on penalty kicks in the CAC title game.

Sophomore Stephanie Eyler scored her CAC-leading 20th goal of the season unassisted in the game's eighth minute to give Stevenson a 1-0 lead. It also extended her streak to nine straight games with at least one goal.

HOPKINS WOMEN'S SOCCER: Senior Caitlin Moore scored a pair of goals as 10th-ranked Johns Hopkins shut out Haverford, 3-0, in the conference tournament semifinals of the Centennial Conference Tournament. The Blue Jays win their fourth straight - all shutouts - and improved to 15-3-0.

UMBC VOLLEYBALL: The Retrievers dropped their 2009 home finale to Binghamton, 3-0, falling to 13-11 overall in the 25-18, 25-17, 25-20 loss.

Sophomore Alyssa Lang earned her seventh double-double of the season with 10 kills and 10 digs, while senior Pam Jarrett led the Retrievers with 13 digs.

SALISBURY VOLLEYBALL: Salisbury captured its third straight Capital Athletic Conference championship with a 5-16, 25-16, 25-19 victory over Gallaugdet.

The Gulls were led by junior outside hitter Lexy Fitzkee, who finished the match with 10 kills, a .474 hitting percentage, four digs and five service aces. Senior outside hitter Rachel Downes also had 10 kills, plus five digs and one service ace.

SALISBURY FIELD HOCKEY: Senior midfielder Michelle Rowe scored her first goal of the season with less than six minutes left to break a 1-1 tie and lift the second-ranked Sea Gulls to the 2009 CAC Field Hockey Championship.

UMBC MEN'S SOCCER: Junior midfielder Levi Houapeu scored in the 72nd minute to break a 1-1 tie and give visiting UMBC (13-5-0) a 2-1 win over Binghamton (9-9-1) in the America East quarterfinals.

TOWSON MEN'S SOCCER: Towson entered its season finale with James Madison hoping to build some momentum for next year. However, the Dukes had other ideas and used a hat trick from freshman forward Paul Wyatt to post a 5-2 Colonial Athletic Association victory over the Tigers at the JMU Soccer Complex.

The Tigers end the season with a 7-10-0 overall record and a 4-7-0 mark in the CAA.
