Phelps posted a time of 3 minutes, 39.01 seconds in winning the event, the first of four he plans to compete in during the three-day meet. Phelps, 24, was competing in a field made up mosly of 15- to 17-year-old boys.
Despite the win, the 14-time Olympic gold medalist was well off any sort of internationally-competitive time. Phelps' winning time was 3 seconds off the U.S. short-course record of 3:35.98 in the event.
