Forgot to ask - 2010-02-10 10:44:18
Robert,
I forgot to ask about your statment:
"I've seen 2 or 3 emergency vehicles get stuck and have to shovel themselves out".
What were you doing as you watched them dig themselves out? What were your "friends" doing, you know, the ones with equipment.. what were they doing?
I am sure if you or them did actually lift a finger (not to type) to help out, you would be sure to flip your hand in asking for $$$ from the state!
Next time you see an emergency vehicle get stuck in the snow. Do the right thing and go help them. If you are unable due to sikness, health, age; then get on the phone and tell those "friends" to help out!!! That would be a True American thing to do especially not knowing where those vehicles were heading... I hope not your house!

R U serious??? - 2010-02-10 10:37:48
Robert,
Please reconsider your feelings.
You are saying that MD should hire more contractors to help out.How do you propose to pay for them? Have you been watching the news? We have NO money! And the little we may have.. Do we really need to spend more on snow removal?
Do you want to pay more taxes? Where will that money come from?
Reminder: This is not the norm for MD as far as snow.
Just like Haiti. Were they prepared for their disaster? No. They and we are doing what we can to help out. We don't sit around saying: "The state should do this. The state should do that."
Stats:
"Maryland highway officials said they have spent about $50 million so far clearing and treating roads this winter. Thats almost twice the $26 million that had been budgeted."
That stat was just after the first storm... It will be a lot higher now!
Why don't you ask those "people" you know to help out! Help out the emergency vehicles at least.
Sir, I respect your opinion, but I obviously disagree.

Good job(not!!) - 2010-02-10 10:06:07
My neighborhood has yet to see a plow.I've seen so many vehicles get stuck on my street.Hell I've seen 2 or 3 emergency vehicles get stuck and have to shovel themselves out.And dont tell me they dont have enough resources.Hire private contractors to help out.I personally know someone with several pieces of equipment to help with snow removal.I think its time Md calls states that deal with snow constantly and ask how they keep citizens moving.

Good Job - 2010-02-10 08:21:42
Mr. Cook and Mr./Mrs. Pappas did an awesome thing in helping you. The city should not be concerned with plowing YOUR court or the other thousands, of courts.
The city doesn't have the resources, money or employees to plow everything and everywhere. Do you realize how much money we are spending on this already???
We need to do our part and understand that the city, county, state, federal govts are out of money!
And to get more would mean what? We need to either rasie taxes. or CUT things like plowing courts, painting the mayor office and buying new furniture for the mayor.

I apologize. You are correct. The following is directly from the County Code:
Weather-related emergency conditions. During weather-related emergency conditions designated for the County by the Maryland State Police, taxicab operators may add a surcharge of 25% of the metered fare, with a minimum surcharge of $1.00.

Is is different for City taxi's than it is for County taxi's? County taxi rates are set by law.

I want to thank the county for NOT plowing my road as the elderly people on my road who ran out of medication need to learn to toughen up.

neighborly help - 2010-02-09 06:25:33
I wanted to thank Mr. Cook of Admiral Heights and Mrs & Mr Pappas of Admiral Heights for helping me get to work Monday. The city hadn't (and still hasn't) plowed our court. Mr Cook brought his snow blower out and started working on a path to the plowed street. I walked up to the main road to get a cab, Mr & Mrs Pappas saw me and offered to drive me to work since the cab company was charging above normal prices. So thank you all very much. Awesome people in our neighborhood.
