Officials look to delegate for help - Environmental panel head could push tougher Critical Area law

Lawmakers and state officials who failed this year to bolster the "emasculated" state Critical Area law say they expect the legislation to pass in the coming General Assembly session.


Their secret weapon in Annapolis: Del. John Hurson.

The Montgomery County Democrat is the new chairman of the House Environmental Matters Committee, the same committee where legislation that would have strengthened the landmark law stalled last year.

Environmentalists are counting on Mr. Hurson to help push through a stiffer law that would plug a widening loophole on waterront development opened by two Anne Arundel County rulings last...
