When Hoppy Adams excitedly announced "Tonight! Tonight! Tonight!" over the airwaves at WANN 1190 AM, it signaled one thing: Somebody big - maybe James Brown or the Coasters - was about to step on to the stage at Carr's Beach. He was the master of ceremonies in the 1950s and '60s at the concert pavilion on the then-segregated beach for African-Americans just outside Annapolis. Mr. Adams was part of the "Original Ten," a group of African-American radio announcers in the country who gained a reputation with their own playlists of up and coming songs.
