Kids desperately tried to save grandpa in choppy waterPublished 07/03/05
Ira "Chuck" Thompson taught his grandkids how to swim. He taught them about boating safety, too. The things he taught them couldn't save Mr. Thompson last week, but they helped rescuers locate his grandkids, who were left alone on his 40-foot power boat Tuesday evening as he struggled in the chop of wind-whipped Herring Bay. Mr. Thompson had gone for a swim with his 7-year-old grandson Frankie Hoffman, and 4-year-old granddaughter Lauren Lipphard. At some point they drifted too far from the boat. As the 60-year-old man he called "P-Pa" faltered in the water, Frankie remembered his grandfather's words and swam for help....
