Mayor wants to absorb the Naval Academy into the cityPublished 07/08/05
In an effort to boost property tax revenues and add population, Mayor Ellen O. Moyer is proposing that the city stake a claim to the ultimate gated community: the Naval Academy. In a bill the mayor plans to introduce at Monday night's City Council meeting, Annapolis would add the institution's 338 acres to its city limits. Officials hope the change would also let the city add the academy's 4,600 midshipmen, military personnel and family members who live on the grounds to its 2000 census population of 35,838, which would help Annapolis get more funding for transportation and other grants.
