When cries for urban renewal threatened to transform post-World War II Annapolis into another suburban eyesore, Anne St. Clair Wright saw an opportunity for the aging state capital to have "potentially one of the most attractive downtowns in the country." Half a century later, as 2 million tourists a year filter through downtown's quaint brick streets, bolstering business and reviving the city's historic past, there is no doubt about the veracity of Mrs. Wright's vision.
