Maryland has its own public utilities, although most are in more rural areas than Anne Arundel County. Some have power plants to generate their own energy, while others buy electricity contracts at market price. The result? Many offer a better deal than Baltimore Gas and Electric. Minus charges and fees, residential customer of the Thurmont Municipal Light Co. will pay $85.73 per 1,000 kilowatt hours starting this month, $13.26 less than the BGE rates.
