Market AC won't be fixed until after boat shows

Hot air filling the Market House won't be alleviated until after October's boat shows, leaving tenants dependent on a temporary 30-ton portable air-conditioning unit outside.

Photo by Nicole Young - The Capital A 30-ton air-conditioning unit and generator are keeping the Market House cool. Since its opening nearly three weeks ago, the city-run market has had problems with an insufficient air-cooling system, which officials say might not be replaced until late fall.

City officials yesterday dropped more optimistic estimates, saying it will take at least 90 days to design and install a new 60-ton water-cooled system capable of properly cooling the Market House with all its tenants up and running.

The Market House now has a 15-ton air-conditioning unit inside, designed by Timonium-based engineering firm Schlender/Pitz & Associates and approved by Emory Harrison, the city's director of central...
