Four years ago, county officials announced a fresh idea to attract young high-tech companies and help get them off the ground. It was called the Chesapeake Innovation Center and the idea behind it was this: Recruit promising young firms, provide them with office space, business support, and contacts with giants such as the National Security Agency and Northrop Grumman. It would be a taxpayer-funded operation that would pay off when the firms grew into strong companies providing new jobs for Anne Arundel and building the county's tax base.
