Only one more week till signs must come down; after that, county can start fining candidates

The balloons have popped and the confetti has been swept away, but roadside election signs - affectionately known as "litter on a stick" in some parts of the state - will linger for at least another week.

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. will complete part of his vow to change Maryland for the better within a week. Campaign signs in Anne Arundel must be removed by Nov. 15 after which the county can begin doling out $125 per day in fines for each sign.
Candidates have until Wednesday to remove the signs, which have provoked often vitriolic responses from people tired of being bombarded while commuting to work.
"All of the candidates got a letter in the mail in September telling them to take them down by Nov. 15. It's in the county code," said Pam Jordan, spokesman for the county Office of Planning and Zoning.
