A bill signed into law by Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. on May 16, and in effect as of Jan. 1, forbids companies from printing Social Security numbers on paychecks and wage statements. The move is intended to combat the growing fear of identity theft.
However, several area business owners said they were clueless about the new law.
"I didn't know there was a new law, I didn't hear anything about it," said Jennifer McGee, owner of Sign-A-Rama in Annapolis.
