Wanting to streamline the deployment of first responders and limit access to emergency scenes, the state of Maryland is issuing 5,000 universal identification cards to firefighters and police officers.
The $1 million pilot program is already under way, with Montgomery and Prince George's counties getting the initial "First Responder Authentication Credentials."
Anne Arundel County and the city of Annapolis also are in the process of distributing and activating the new smart cards, which electronically identify an individual by name, agency and profession.
