Court voids mid-70s murder conviction HAGERSTOWN - A state court has overturned a murder conviction in the slaying of a Hagerstown police officer more than 30 years ago, according to documents released yesterday. Citing improper jury instructions, the Washington County Circuit Court ordered a new trial for Merle W. Unger Jr., who was sentenced to life plus 40 years for the 1975 shooting of Officer Donald Kline during an armed robbery. Deputy State's Attorney Joseph S.
