Court voids mid-70s murder conviction
HAGERSTOWN - A state court has overturned a murder conviction in the slaying of a Hagerstown police officer more than 30 years ago, according to documents released yesterday.
Citing improper jury instructions, the Washington County Circuit Court ordered a new trial for Merle W. Unger Jr., who was sentenced to life plus 40 years for the 1975 shooting of Officer Donald Kline during an armed robbery.
