Slavery apology gets more support : Kunta Kinte descendant backs city's resolutionPublished 04/24/07
A descendant of Kunta Kinte spoke out last night in support of the city's proposed apology for slavery. William Alexander Haley, son of author Alex Haley, pointed out that although some injustices were forced on whites and some blacks were free, the legacy of the period is the lingering institutional racism that blacks face today. He said the city's apology would help begin to solve the more far-reaching racial inequities. "Racism is now embedded," Mr. Haley said.
