State could be holding your missing treasure

Tired of dubious Nigerian relatives e-mailing you about lost family fortunes? Maybe you should listen to the latest offer from the state's tax collectors.

The Maryland Comptroller's Office is trying to return $50 million in unclaimed funds and property to 75,000 rightful owners.

Banks and insurance companies turn over unclaimed funds and safe deposit boxes to the state if they're unable to find an owner after three years, and the state takes over the search, publishing an annual list of those who are on the receiving end.

The complete 80-page list appears in today's edition of The Capital.
