Illegal asbestos dumping alleged

A California man is facing up to five years in prison and thousands of dollars in fines after pleading guilty in federal court yesterday to lying about dumping asbestos-filled trailers in west county.

Federal officials allege that Terrance Yates, 43, dumped the trailers in Severn instead of sending them to a landfill in Pennsylvania, according to court documents.

Asbestos is a hazardous air pollutant and carcinogen that's tightly regulated. There are rules to make sure the asbestos fibers don't escape into the air when it's removed during building demolition or renovation. Asbestos must be transported in leak-proof containers...
