A county police officer honored as a hero two years ago agreed yesterday to never serve in law enforcement again if the state agreed to not prosecute him for child abuse.
Shane Poteet, 38, an 8-year veteran who left the department shortly before the charges were filed March 7, also agreed to give up his gun and not carry a weapon in the United States. He can still serve as a correctional officer, according to court records.
Kristin Riggin, spokesman for the State's Attorneys Office, said prosecutors decided it was better to put the charges on an inactive docket than to put the now 12-year-old victim through a trial.
