Anne Arundel has $5 billion stormwater problemPublished 10/10/07
In the latest public estimate of the county's stormwater woes, a county engineer said yesterday that removing existing pollution and preventing more in Anne Arundel's waterways will cost as much as $5 billion.
"That's billion. With a 'B,' " County Auditor Teresa Sutherland repeated to the County Council during a work session.
The cost revelation reframed debate on an excise tax to help fix the problem, and led councilmen and environmentalists to conclude more drastic measures may be in order. The estimate includes all costs to fix polluted streams, install pollution control technology in new homes and retrofit older...
