Twenty years ago, sign language was easy for Steve Applegate.
As time passed, he let his skills deteriorate, but after a refresher American Sign Language course at Anne Arundel Community College, he's teaching his own course, and helping with sign language in emergencies.
Anne Arundel Medical Center sponsored the course and Mr. Applegate was among seven hospital employees to complete the class earlier this month. Now, the hospital staff uses Mr. Applegate in emergency situations where people who are not deaf need to communicate with a person who is deaf.
