Paying to play? Leopold's donations from developers raise questionsPublished 01/20/08
County Executive John R. Leopold's record-breaking fundraising campaign has critics worrying what donors will get in return and others questioning how a maverick politician who used to finance his own campaigns managed to collect a half-million dollars in one year.
Most of the money came from furious fundraising in the county's development community, both raising concern that Mr. Leopold will be beholden to developers, and leaving developers disagreeing over exactly how Mr. Leopold convinced them to part with thousands.
