Thousands of half-naked people huddled near the shore of the Chesapeake Bay yesterday, yelping at the near-freezing temperatures before charging into the water for the annual Polar Bear Plunge.
The spectacle of Speedos, costumes, goose bumps and tattoos (on body parts normally viewed only in intimate settings) at Sandy Point State Park raised at least $3 million for Special Olympics Maryland.
The annual event drew a record 10,000 plungers - so many that they plunged in three shifts - as well as the customary smorgasbord of characters indulging in silliness and generosity.
