Dwyer attempts immigrant roundup during hearing

Published 03/20/08

State government hearings occasionally have ferocious debate and rowdy crowds, but yesterday may have marked a first as a local delegate called in federal law enforcement agents to make arrests.

Del. Don Dwyer, R-Glen Burnie, is known as one of the most conservative members of the General Assembly and is no friend to illegal immigrants. So much so, in fact, he instructed his staff to contact U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials before a hearing in the Department of Legislative Services building.

Many people in the audience were Hispanic and wore buttons that said "License = Safety," a cornerstone slogan for...

Thank You Don Dwyer - March 28, 2008

If I get behind another group of ILLEGAL hispanics in the grocery store all using food stamps and vouchers and then proceeding to get into their brand new Escalades, Expeditions, and the like (with full insurance coverage - probably not) I'll scream. The tomato pickers must be doing pretty well in their brand new SUV's. I guess not paying taxes, getting free groceries, free rent, and free health care allows these big ticket extravagant items! How nice. I'll continue working, as my LEGAL immigrant ancestors did to ensure their lifestyles are maintained. In addition, they just want a better life - well they're getting it and then some. Please don't feel the need to learn English and please continue with the attitudes and right of entitlement. God Bless the man and his family who have had to endure being in a car accident with the ILLEGAL immigrant who had no insurance coverage, we have a friend (husband and father) who was killed in the same type of situation and a year later the authorities are still deciding on a punishment/penalties. Enough is Enough! Thank you Don!

Stand up... - March 25, 2008

...and give yourselves a round of applause and pat yourselves on the back..."tomato pickers made an average of $16.59 per hour last year, he said the relatively high wage is not enough to attract local labor to work the fields. "A lot of people think with immigration that we're talking about immigrants taking jobs from others. Let me tell you, there is no local labor that is going to go out and harvest those tomatoes in 90-degree temperatures except our immigrant labor," Eckel said. "They come here to do a job that no one else will do in this country." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/24/AR2008032402093.html?tid=informbox

Good points... - March 25, 2008

Illegal immigration opponents have very good points and I completely agree that ANY individual who commits a crime should be punished to the full extent of the law. If legislation passes that requires each individual to prove their citizenship, say, during a traffic stop, it better be applied across the board so that if you have a last name of Martinez, it will be verified that you are not an illegal immigrant from Latin America or Spain...if you have a last name of Kim, it will be verified that you are not an immigrant from Korea...if you have a last name of DWYER, it will be verified that you are not an immigrant from Ireland. Is every Marylander ready to carry their birth certificate or US Passport every where they go? Taking the kids to Ocean City? Grab all of your paperwork! Crusing the Bay for an all-guys fishing trip? Bring your documents so when you come back to shore, MD Immgration will be waiting for you.

Good points (cont...) - March 25, 2008

As for the family involved in the car accident caused by an illegal immigrant, I'm truly sorry for your pain and suffering. Imagine though if the driver of the other car was John Smith from Connecticut and had no insurance. You could sue Mr. Smith and he could walk, like you said the immigrant did, and you'd still be in the same unfortunate situation with medical bills because this immigrant should be deported and you would have the impossible task of collecting from this person in another country. All I'm saying is don't focus your anger and hatred towards individuals who are, yes, here illegally but are trying to make a better life for their families. I would hope that the same breath that you're using to comment on illegal immigrants you're also voicing your opinions on the millions of US citizens of ALL RACES who refuse to earn a decent living cuz they're too lazy to work a construction job, or babysit, or landscape our highways. Focus should be on pressing your Congressman/Congresswoman to enforce the laws regarding the border itself and apply pressure to businesses who employ illegal immigrants. When those employers recognize that the US Govt is actually enforcing the laws created by Congress, they'll think twice about putting their livelihood on the line and risk losing their license to do business all together.

Thank you Delegate Dwyer - March 24, 2008

Thank you for standing up for the rights of American citizens. Those here illegally have no standing whatsoever to be part of any hearings on bills. They are not citizens and therefore have no legal or moral right to participate in our legislative process.

Dwyer Calls ICE - March 22, 2008

Rep. Dwyer should be commended. When the people who choose to protest in our country are illegal aliens, they should be forewarned that they may just be picked up, arrested and deported. When they realize that we will enforce our laws, perhaps they will not be as brazen as they are now. Their advocates are doing a great disservice to the American citizens by promoting their lawlessness.

Blame it on the Feds - March 21, 2008

Too many people are fighting the wrong fight, lead by Del. Dwyer and others. Our Delegates should be working to correct MARYLAND's issues and prioritize them accordingly. The Federal Government is responsible for correcting the flaws at the border, which has allowed illegal immigrants to flood the gates, so to speak. Del. Dwyer should run for Congress and TRY to make a difference there.

illegals: - March 21, 2008

The illegals need to be sent packing NOW!...my once clean, quiet neighborhood has been invaded by a dozen mexicans who have set up a junk yard in their yard selling to whoever comes up with a wad of cash...they take tags (out of state and expired) and put them on these vehicles and the person who buys it drives off...no inspection, no insurance etc> I have complained to the state police who sent me to the county police who sent me to zoning enforcement who have done nothing after 8 letters of complaint....why arent the laws enforced in this county?!...maybe I should take my tax money and move to another state where they care about their people...get rid of this invasion now before the people do it for you!

Dwyer` - March 21, 2008

Dwyers attitude towards every minority group speaks of a meanness that is not to far removed from the maniac Phelps who celebrates at the funerals of our soldiers, and gay children who are murdered by homophobes. We all need to wonder what is going on in his mind? Why does he hate so much? Why is he so negative. Who is his God - a God of Christian compassion and love for all, or a God of hatred?. Didn't the bible say something about "judge not lest ye be judged", Mr. Dwyer? Your day will ultimately come when you will have to answer for your misdeeds in this life to a higher authority.

Brittanicus - March 20, 2008

We can stop the travesty of our laws, if only the majority of Democrats would co-sign the SAVE ACT. With only 18 more votes to go, we could bring this enforcement only bill to a vote. However, the Democrats want to attache an addendum to the bill. It would give the 12 to 20 million foreign nationals occupying our nation, an easy ride to legality. This is wrong when millions wait for years patiently, to get THE PEOPLES permission to get a entry visa. The SAVE ACT is a by-partisan law is awaiting just 18 signers, to bring this enforcement only to a House vote. The SAVE ACT will supersede any state laws, in its magnitude. It will go after the real culprits who are the predator employers. It is enforcement by Attrition or Self-Deportation. Cannot get work, then they will leave of their own accord. If you are one of the citizens fed up with subsiding the poor, uneducated from around the world. When the new personage steps into 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW, then we will be seeing the 12 to 20 million getting a path to citizenship. Nobody should have a right to legalization without going home and being processed like all immigrants. YOU! And only YOU, can stop this travesty of our Immigration laws? Tell your representatives to co-author THE SAVE ACT? Congress is currently on recess through March 31st, so your representative will likely be in the home constituency and available to meet with its citizens. FREE FAXES FOUND HERE. Keep calling your Congressmen today, toll free numbers include 1-877-851-6437 and 1-866-220-0044, or call toll 1-202-224-3121 AND REGISTER YOUR OUTRAGE at ongoing efforts to keep our country from enforcing its immigration laws! http://capwiz.com www.numbersusa.com www.fairus.org www.vdare.org

****Hooray Don Dwyer***** - March 20, 2008

Hooray to you Don Dwyer for representing those who elected you---US citizens---and doing the right thing!! You are right...US citizens and LEGAL immigrants have nothing to worry about. However, illegals should not be welcomed to voice their opinions at hearings, etc. If they want to voice their opinions and push for change, benefits, etc.----they need to go back to their own countries!! We are a country of laws---and we should NOT reward those who break our laws in any way. We are a country of laws---and the illegals should NOT be accommodated/rewarded---while millions of people throughout the world are waiting in line---trying to come into our country through the proper, legal process!! Again, hooray to you!!!
