Published 04/21/08

Driver Rebecca Lynn Moore, 23, and her 18-year-old passenger, Keira Gwenise Mosaid, both of Crofton, died upon impact, county police said. Ms. Mosaid was home from college at Bowie State University visiting friends and family, her mother said.

Police said Ms. Moore was driving her 2007 Hyundai Accent southbound on Davidsonville Road just north of Bottner Road at 1:16 a.m. The vehicle drifted to the right and struck a curb. Ms. Moore over-steered to the left, causing the car to drive off the left side of the roadway, police said.

Once it left the roadway, the car flipped onto its left side and struck several trees. It stopped on its left side partially wrapped around a tree. Police officers said alcohol, drug usage and excessive speed are believed to be major contributing factors in the accident.

Ms. Mosaid was a recent graduate of South River High School, said her mother, Lachelle Mosaid. Ms. Mosaid said her daughter was in the process of transferring to Shaw University in Raleigh, N.C.

Keira Mosaid was the oldest child and was very close to her younger brother. It was unclear how she and Ms. Moore knew each other.

Ms. Moore's family could not be reached for comment. Though police said Ms. Moore was currently living in Crofton, she is from Riverdale.

"She was a great person," Lachelle Mosaid said about her daughter through tears this morning. "She was loved by all of her family and friends. She was wonderful."

A terrible mix - April 28, 2008

I've driven that road a lot over the past 20 years, and even in dry conditions, during the day in the sunshine, it's ridiculously dangerous. It's narrow, there are blind curves and lots of blind dips and humps. Add all the driveways and side roads, and it's a recipe for disaster. There's an accident on that three-mile stretch probably once per week. Toss drugs, alcohol, and excessive speed into the mix, and it's a done deal. I knew Rebecca only casually...she seemed like such a nice young lady. Rest in peace.

Can we be pro active? - April 25, 2008

Jim and A - I couldn't agree with you more! The road needs to be improved. I generally choose to take 3 to 50 because 424 is so unfavorable to me, especially in the evening. Not only because it?s narrow but add the dips and curves, and the deer and other animals that wander out of the woods that cause you to flinch, or brake or swerve it?s just a nightmare stretch of road! I wonder how we could get the community to rally around the idea of road improvements on 424, like they rallied to keep the big box store off of Rte 3?!?! It appears more land is being prepared for development ? so more driveways? Minimally more traffic on a road that is already inadequate. I would like to add that I had the pleasure to be acquainted with Kiera; she was a polite and respectful young woman who was not selfish with her smile! She will certainly be missed by those who knew and loved her.

I agree with Safety - April 24, 2008

I agree Jim. I think this accident would have happened whether they were intoxicated or not! It is a very narrow roadway and I know when I have driven that road in the dark it can be scary especially where the curbs are on the road. If you hit one of those curbs, no matter how fast you are going the consequences are not going to be good. I think instead of rallying to shut down "the house" we should rally that the county look into widening this road! Most parts of the road there isn't even anywhere to pull over in an emergency! I do not know either one of the girls or their families but my heart goes out to them - this was a very sad tragedy!

Safety on 424 - April 24, 2008

There was another fatal accident in this same area recently. The car crossed the center line but instead of leaving the road - hit another car head on. A driver died from the injuries. Accidents in this area are not a rare occurrence. Heavy trucks are prohibited for safety reasons but use the highway with out penalty! Bussing of Crofton area children to South River puts many of children at risk on weekdays! This road is worse than 301 through Crofton.

rebecca,you are so missed - April 23, 2008

It seems so sureal and hard to imagine the world without you. Although your physical body has left the earth your soul will live forever. remember that you wil be reunited with everyone you loved and who loves you, again. You are in our hearts forever. You were such a blast to be around and at the same time you had care and concern for everyone around you.The last itme I saw you we carved pumpkins on Halloween (your pumpkin was by far the coolest)Natalie will not remember what a wonderful "Aunt to-be", she had, but we will tell her. I'm so sad for all the people you loved and left behind. Memories will last. GOD took you away from us that fatefull night and 4/20 will never be the same. I'm sure you are in heaven now (probably listening to B.Marley or Sumblime-- Live :)It is reassuring ot know that you left the earth immediatly without having to suffer. Our thoughts and prayers are with You, Beth, Paul, Bobby, Tiffany, family and freinds of Kiera and everyone else who so dearly loved you. Peace now and always Lauren, Robert, and Natalie Hunt

Losing Site of a Tragedy - April 23, 2008

I think everyone should be praying for the girls who lost their lives and their families instead of trying to blame other people for what happened. The girls were adults and knew right from wrong. They chose to do what they were doing that night even though we know that was a terrible choice. Parents can only teach and advise their children through the years but in the end we all make our own choiced good or bad. Unfortunately the girls made a bad choice. Beating up each other and blaming others will not fix anything that has happened. It could have been anyones child that night. For those of you who have children safe and alive be grateful, for those who just lost their child, we will keep you in our prayers.

Several comments have been posted regarding a problem "house" in the area, which may or may not have been the site of a party attended by the girls involved in this horrible accident. My office represents a person having an interest in stopping such activities at a certain home on Davidsonville Road where such activities have occurred in the past. Anyone having "personal knowledge" of the events that transpired at the "house" on the night of this accident should contact my office. 410.956.2000.

Where is this HOUSE??? - April 23, 2008

I see several comments about this house, and vague mentions as to where is is, e.g. "girls were drinking at a house less than a mile away from the accident". As a parent of a teen myself I want to know where this house is and who lives there. If I did know I would definitely post it so other parents are aware of it.

Sweet Hearts - April 23, 2008

What happened that night was the worst nightmare i had ever had and i never imagned it would have happened to any of us. But this has changed the lives of many and it took two wonderful girls for us to make that change. Its sad and tough but they are still loved and missed and always will be. No one can change what happened and blaming one another is the right thing to do we just need to be the for one another and help everyone esp. the families get through this. love you Keira and Becca

Apologies - April 23, 2008

J. Strine since you singled my comments out - I am sorry if I offended you or anyone else related to the house. Believe me that was not my intention. However, I do know first hand of the house - I have picked up puking kids from the place. We have to trust our kids, we have given them values and pray they apply them. They ARE kids and they ARE going to go where the fun is - permitted or NOT! The issue isn't that the parent is a bad guy - he is away on weekends and well that provides the opportunity for unsupervised fun for the kids.

the point is... - April 23, 2008

I am not pointing fingers or blaming anyone. The fate of these two young women was in their own hands. Fate twisted when the car brushed that curb. The point is, (maybe I should have NOT mentioned the house) the speed involved and the poor judgment in driving that fast on THAT road should have each of us [teens to geezers] THINKING when we are at the wheel! The sorrowful point or lesson in this tragedy is as long as you get where you're going safely it doesn't matter when you get there! To party at a frat, dorm, sorority, Knox Box etc., was fun and many times no invitation needed - however anything in excess, that takes you from class causes some fundamentals to be missed; i.e. "there" is an adjective, "their" is a pronoun, and "they're is a contraction of they are. Parties are great! In MODERATION.

Whats important - April 22, 2008

This is such a tragedy and it seems to me after reading these comments people are trying to point fingers and put the blame on somebody. These girls which were both adults made a poor decision which has taken their lives. I knew these girls and all of the families involved. The road they crashed on has had so many fatal accidents through the years, its just a unsafe road with no guardrails through the hills and turns that are always dark and wet at night. The county really needs to address this issue on 424 and 450. I have lost friends on both roads. It is such a shame that these two young beautiful people were taken from us. To all of the hateful people that want to blame this on this so called "party house" because they were never invited to party's when they were in college should show some respect to all of the families involved and keep there mouths closed about things that they have not been educated on. I can't believe the girls haven't even been buried yet and people are on here disrespecting there memory with this trash talk. The families can work things out on there own they don't need your misinformed opinions to help. God please comfort and guide these families through this terrible tragedy. And please know that you are in our prayers

Every weekend - April 22, 2008

Kids drink at that house every weekend. Every weekend. The parent had to be court ordered to to take his minor children with him. He threatens anyone who comes on his property to get their kids. I am sure he'll squirm out of this one too. Not even the death of two young girls will affect him.

The House - April 22, 2008

Lou, Wow, you really make "The House" sound like a fraternity house.Maybe you should get all your facts straight about "The House" before you make it sound like such a horrible place. A great family lives there at all times. Yes the father will visit his 2nd home some weekends, which he is allowed to do. When he does both minor children are either w/ him, their mother, another family member, or a supervised adult. Yes he will leave his 18 yr old home by herself. Some parents trust their kids a little more than maybe they should, just like all the other parents out there who seem to trust their kids who seem to have attended all the past party's at " The House"! Maybe parents need to take a 2nd look at where their kids are really going when they walk out of their front door. Social Service's didn't seem to find a problem w/ things going on there, so maybe the problem really is w/ the Party Attendee's upbringing and their parents!!!! My thought's and prayers to out to both of the girls family and friends.

Sadly - April 22, 2008

The House is a problem - the house needs to be addressed did it take THIS to get it done? Adam - Rebecca may have been 23 and legal but most participants in that unsupervised HOUSE are not! Two young lives that will never reach their potentential because of recklessness, a lapse in judement, one wrong move.... Whatever we call it.. IF it happens ONCE, it happens too often. Destination party house, destination home, destination friend in need, destination concert, destination fun! Destination!! reach your Destination!!! The little bit of whatever it is we might miss by not being in a hurry to get "there" is well worth getting there! The rush in "getting there" now has Keira and Rebecca missing a lifetime of "being there". To those of you who have lost, I wish you strength. To the rest of us who are always in a hurry to "get there" - slow down and "GET THERE" someone will tell you what you missed. And the party gates should close at THAT HOUSE!

The House - April 22, 2008

The sad thing is that this accident was totally avoidable. The girls were drinking at a house less than a mile away from the accident. This house is known for parties. Adults rarely reside in this house. The police have been called to this house for under age drinking and other social services issues multiple times in the past few years. The police, court system, and social services all failed to shut this house down and make the parents responsible for what happens in this home every single weekend. Under age drinking is out of control in this county. This behavior is not happening in the woods or a field somewhere. Under age drinking is openly happening in houses all over our county.

Tragic and sad! - April 21, 2008

A very tragic and completely *preventable* accident takes the lives of two well loved friends. "Police officers said alcohol, drug usage and excessive speed are believed to be major contributing factors in the accident." Friends should have stopped them from getting into the car and driving in such a state. Sad, very sad.

i cant believe you are gone. i just cant believe it.. i miss you soo much. at least you are with your dad i just want you to no that you are one of my hero's and o god will i miss you more than works can explain..i'll always remember how you would brush your hair 100 times and still complain it wasnt good enough! ill take good care of your mom. I remember the days we spent together, were not enough, it used to feel like dreaming Except we always woke up, Never thought not having you here now Would hurt so much Tonight I've fallen and I can't get up I need your loving hands to come and pick me up And every night I miss you I can just look up And know the stars are Holding you, holding you, holding you Tonight "I remember the time you told me About when you were eight And all those things you said that night That just couldn't wait I remember the car you were last seen in And the games we would play All the times we spilled our coffees And stayed out way too late" (fm static tonight) ill miss you i love you so much.. your my big cuz and I MISS YOU.

The Ladies - April 21, 2008

Keira and Becca were both wonderful girls. I was extremely close with both of them and with them moments before they died. This serves as a reminder that life is too short to take for granted and that we all need to be careful and not take life for granted.

Safety Davidsonville Road - April 21, 2008

The accidents on Davidsonville Road in this area are often fatal. The speed limit of 45 mph is already excessive and never enforced between the firehouse and Route 50 interchange
