All that glitters is not gold.
And metal thieves realize there's still some value in those other metals.
That's led to copper and aluminum wires being stolen from utility companies more frequently, and has prompted police to create special plans to protect trouble spots. It's an expensive problem. In 2007 metal thefts cost Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. $582,000, up from $116,000 in 2006, said Linda Foy, a spokesman for the company.
