When Matt Miller saw the little Iraqi girl with the gaping neck wound, his instincts as a soldier and paramedic took over.
Photo by J. Henson - The CapitalParamedic Matthew Miller takes a refresher course yesterday before returning to regular duty. The nine-year verteran of the county Fire Department just returned from his second tour of duty in Iraq, where he was awarded two Bronze Star medals.
The 40-year-old National Guardsman from Pasadena, on his second tour of Iraq, didn't think twice before jumped from his armored Humvee to go help the 6-year-old.
It wasn't until a bullet whizzed past his head, nailing a nearby Iraqi soldier in the buttocks, that he realized the girl had been shot in the neck as bait for a sniper. Sgt.
