The odds were against Cpl. Michael Harper as he paddled a canoe through frigid water to rescue a teenage boy stranded on a chunk of ice that was floating far from shore and quickly sinking.
Not only was most of the water off Bay Head Road frozen and difficult to row through, but Cpl. Harper faced another problem - other than cold - should the canoe tip over during his efforts: he doesn't know how to swim.
Without hesitation, he had jumped into a canoe he found nearby, and with the help of the boy's mother, rowed, and dug his way out of ice, until he was by the teenager's side. Within minutes, the boy was back on shore,...
