Twice a week in the partly shaded end of Freetown Park, a diamond of dirt becomes a place where impossibilities evaporate.
Tyler Hamrick, 11, haltingly walked into the batters box Tuesday evening and jostled his disobedient legs into a batter's stance. He warmed up by whacking his bat onto home plate no less than 10 times, then spent the next four minutes swinging, missing every single pitch slowly lobbed at his bat.
The crowd goes wild. And they never stop cheering until Tyler finally connects and begins his haphazard run to first base, grinning from ear to ear.
