Attorneys: Low pay hurts capital casesPublished 06/17/08
Private attorneys hired by the state to represent an inmate charged with murdering a correctional officer in 2006 claim they are not paid enough to adequately represent their client. Michael Lawlor of Greenbelt and Gary Proctor of Baltimore said yesterday that at $50 an hour they are so underpaid that Lee Stephens, 29, should not face the death penalty in connection with the stabbing death of Officer David McGuinn.
