Crownsville Hospital property in limboPublished 06/24/08
The state is seeking a developer for the Crownsville Hospital Center two years after county officials expressed interest in taking over the property. Now, anyone interested in the more than 530-acre property can contact the state Department of Health and Mental Hygiene by Monday. But that move has county officials worried about the impact a new development could have on the surrounding community, not to mention the nonprofit organizations already located there. Last week, County Councilmen Josh Cohen, D-Annapolis, and Jamie Benoit, D-Crownsville, sent a letter to state officials asking them to keep in mind five factors when...

Pave the world? - June 26, 2008
Good point Lisa. Why the need to develop everything? I was commenting to my wife about all the fields and woods I used to play in as a kid now have houses or strip malls on them. My children will not have any of the space to roam as I did. The roads in Crownsville cannot sustain the traffic. I think what is alluring about Crownsville is that is not over developed. The county thinks tax dollars every chance they can. Why not preserve this property like they want for the golf course. Route 50 is jammed every day at 5pm, we don?t need General?s Highway to follow.

Are you kidding me?? - June 25, 2008
Haven't we seen enough development? This is OUT of CONTROL!!!!!!!!!! Everywhere we look there is a new development going up, or a shopping center with 1 useful store and 200 stores nobody cares about. We don't need more people, more stores, or more traffic!!!! Greed... That is ALL this boils down to.

IN LIMBO!!!???? - June 25, 2008
This makes me so angry. This building was a hospital for the mentally ill. No longer. Patients were forced to leave so that the property could be sold to the county. And now that is NOT happening? It is in LIMBO? The state of mental health care in Maryland is shameful. State mental hospitals are not desirable places to be, but for the uninsured or underinsured, they were at least an option to suffering alone, homelessness, and possibly suicide. Such hospitals are almost extinct in Maryland. Had there been more facilities available in our state I have no doubt that my loved one--and the loved ones of thousands of other Marylanders--would still be alive right now. Crownsville was closed as a mental hospital for no reason? I'm disgusted, disgusted, disgusted. The mentally ill are not even second class citizens here; it seems they are not even worthy of our policymakers' consideration.
