45 busted in immigration raid

Published 06/30/08

County police said they rounded up 45 suspected undocumented workers this morning at various locations throughout the county.

About 50 county police officers participated in the joint operation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Units fanned out at 6 a.m., with officers targeting Annapolis Painting Services, where many of the workers were employed. The raid also included 15 residences, County Executive John R. Leopold said.

"This will send a very strong signal that this administration, with the cooperation of ICE, will not tolerate the hiring of illegal immigrants in this county," he said, standing across the...

leter to a friend - November 22, 2008

Dear Patricia, I know I have came accosted to you in ways that have you confused. Knowing that you are illegal in the states really puts you in a bad place. Its about trust and integrity of the person. When you knowingly violate the law and don?t take responsible for your action. You give up any rights you have and don?t have any ground to stand on. Justifying that you are not the only one doing this and you pay taxis does not make it right. You have open a night mare that has no end , every thing you do in life from now on will be questioned. I am very sympathetic for you and other in your situation, but Americans are not responsible for what happens to you and the families that knowingly violated the law. American families are being hurt from this on every level in the usa. You and others that are illegal are responsible for this, and not the company that employ you. The company need to change their business structure and spend some of what they make to generate new profit. No company needs to hire illegal, they just made a choices to under cut the bottom instead of adjusting at the top. So maybe now you will under stand were I am coming from and others in America. I truly have feelings for you, but I have to stand on my believes. That hasn?t been easy for me because I see the good in people. As long as your illegal I feel for you . I hope you don?t get married under these circumstances because the question will always be there, Does she love me and why does she love me. I hope you have taken something from what I have shared with you over the past 3 years. And yes, I do miss you. Bill

Melting Pot? - July 2, 2008

Wasn't this great nation called "the melting pot"? Isn't democracy based on INCLUSION as opposed to EXCLUSION? Aren't we all the children of immigrants? Whatever happened to the quote in the statue of liberty that says "bring me your cold huddled masses"...? Most of us have some background that goes either to Ellis Island or some form of "illegal" immigration. We've only referred to these folks as "illegal" since the 80s, before that, we called them "undocumented immigrants". Historically, when emigrees are castigated as pariahs, there is another much darker intention behind it. Maybe before pat ourselves on the back and call ourselves "patriots", slap a magnet on the back of the car, we should consider what it is to be an American. That's being a part of an inclusive society that's tolerance and freedom are a beacon to the rest of the world; an inspiration to do the right thing, an example of courage (because this grand experiment will crumble if we react to fear), the proof positive that our freedoms and possibilities are what all people from all places want. Isn't that why our forefathers came here in the first place, why the founding fathers fought a war of independence, why the greatest generation put it all on the line to defend our way of life, why we fought a long and bloody civil war, and why we have been graced with stability and relative comfort for such a long period of time here in the USA? Shame on all of those folks that capitulate to the fears of anti-immigrant sentiment! That's just un-American. I have to ask all of those who applaud the recent raid, " Why are you such America haters?" Whatever happened to 'the Golden Rule"- do onto others as you would want them to do to you.... Where did my America go?

Moral Ground - July 1, 2008

What moral ground does a nation built on land stolen from Native Americans have? A people who killed millions of natives and enslaved the rest now enacts laws to keep other out. That is the position of our God-fearing and conservative fellow citizens. Jesus, Buddha, and Mohammad might all have suggest we welcome the world's poor and underprivileged. But we see the right wing working to imprison and deport them, spewing hatred, not compassion.

It's a no win........... - July 1, 2008

If you do something illegal, it is illegal. Plain and simple. Someone stated previoulsy that these people are working and paying there taxes, if they are here illegally, who are they paying taxes to?? All parties should be held accountable, including the buisness. As for they are filling positions that lazy americans won't fill.....my son can't even get a part time job around here because they (immigrants) take them all, becuase that is all they can do. I am definetly not prejeduced, I work with documented immigrants, and would call them my friends. On the other hand, I would like someone to be able to understand my order at Mcdonalds!!

God - July 1, 2008

If you want to bring God into it, God also said that you should follow laws made by your fellow man or "obey your leaders and submit to their authority." So by the fact that these illegal immigrants are not following the law, they are in fact going against God's will. Just do it legally, as I am sure your ancestors did when they came to this country. Then there is nothing to complain about. But if they are not following the federal law, why should we assume that they are suddenly good, law abiding citizens on the local level? They are breaking the law every day that they are here illegally. The effort it takes to go through the legal process is much less effort then using someone else's name and SS# and stay "underground" for how ever long you stay in the states. Again, do it legally--then I will truly believe that they are "good people." Otherwise, you are just another person breaking the law.

The Buck Stops... - July 1, 2008

Of course we have to round up and send home the illegals who cavalierly flaunt our laws. But the harshest punishment should be dealt to the business owner enabling these people. If the allegations are true, this man has made a huge fortune by flagrantly breaking the law. He has many homes in the county and has not only exploited foreign workers, he has hurt honest employers in our area. Such disgusting misconduct merits exactly one thing: A long stint in federal prison.

Raid - July 1, 2008

Something is very wrong here. The article doesn't say what charges were brought against the person hiring the illegals. Surely charges were brought against the business owner? The manager? They allowed all this to happen. Wouldn't that be something like 45 counts of aiding and abetting?? Are you sure he isn't a coyote? Have you checked him for human trafficking? And his family??? They are the ones who profited from these illegal acts. These people need to be in jail too.

Sad about Raid - July 1, 2008

This raid just seems so wrong to me. Our country was founded and built by immigrants. Most immigrants (both legal and illegal) contribute positively to our society and work hard at jobs most of us don't want to do anymore. How many of our kids would rather work at the mall or in an internship than paint houses in the hot humid summer? As for businesses taking advantage of illegals, it's not so clear cut. Compared to how they would do in their home country, working here is much better and they could make more than 10 times what they could make in their home country. So, how is that taking advantage of someone when you give them a chance at a much better life for themselves and their families? Sure they work hard but that's been the American story. You start at the bottom and work yourselves up. That's what my parents did. I find it sad that so many are happy about this. You harp about "Illegal is Illegal" and are vehemently against amnesty. But many of you might claim to be Christians who believe in a God that has created the greatest amnesty program ever.

Individual or Corp? - July 1, 2008

I don't think this was an attack at the immigrant but instead a corporation who is benefiting from employing illegal workers. We all know there is an immigration problem in America. It's been going on for decades. We need to penalize the companies behind the employment of these workers. I think it's horrible that Annapolis Painting took advantage of these indiviuals. I am sure taxes were not paid on the illegal workers and they were most likely paid less for their work. This enabled Annapolis Painting to prosper and purchase homes in the area to house their workers. I am sure we will learn more as the case unfolds but it's ridiculous that one company has 45+ illegal workers. Who knows how many more they had that weren't actually caught. The homes that were raided, several in Hillsmere, were basically rooming houses for their workers. This company exploited these illegal immigrants for their benefit. For those of you that think this was an attack on the poor illegal immigrant--shouldn't you have issues with their employer taking advantage of them too? This raid was a way in which to do this.

Sad day - June 30, 2008

Don't people realize that illegal immigrants are only illegal because they have no other option? Because of restrictions our antiquated system places on visas, there is virtually no way to get a visa to come here legally from their countries unless you are highly educated and skilled. These people were here working hard, paying taxes, and contributing to society--probably all things your immigrant ancestors did as well. This witch hunt the county executive has led only serves his purpose and that of his party--to rile up his base before the fall elections. These actions make me sad to admit I'm from Anne Arundel County.

I am not for illegals. That being said, it is unfortunate that LAZY young Americans will not work for 8$ - 10$ per hour (mommy and daddy always paying the way these days) The fact is that illegals are building America; just look at ANY jobsite in the country. So make sure you thank the illegals for there service before shipping them off. They probably built your house! Carrie Hot Neck - Annapolis

Annapolis painting website seems pretty proud of their ?government portfolio?. "U.S. Naval Academy, the Annapolis Capitol Building, and other landmark facilities." This is the wake up call that many business and homeowners across the county have needed. A calling out of business publicly may be the only way to ensure that employees are legal.
