Big Brother is watchingPublished 07/13/08
If you've taken a stroll down Main Street in the past five months, chances are you were videotaped by a federally funded surveillance camera.
Joshua McKerrow — The Capital
Cameras funded by the Department of Homeland Security give officials a bird’s-eye view of much of Main Street and Market Square. Four are in place with plans for 40 more around the city. The panning lenses of the cameras - paid for with a grant from the Department of Homeland Security - are monitored at the Annapolis Police Department. Currently there are four cameras scanning Main Street and Market Space, but plans are in place to eventually install 44 cameras through the city, said Sgt. Pamela Johnson from the city Police Department's Intelligence and Homeland Security Unit. "That's the ultimate plan. We're applying for grant funding for each...

Good Deterrent - 2008-07-21 21:39:24
The city should publicize the cameras as a deterrent. Although Eastport is worse, there is plenty of crime in the historic district. The cameras could free up the police to focus on the more serious crimes.

Chris K., I don't think so, the United States of America is the GREATEST country in the world. A few camera's don't change that.

Big Brother - 2008-07-16 11:41:42
I'm not sure I understand. The cameras are here to prevent terrorism - but No one regularly monitors the cameras in real time. Instead the cameras are used in criminal investigations. Well, I guess an act of terrorism would also be a criminal act. So the cameras are for crime but they are in downtown Annapolis - not the projects, not Eastport where there is gunfire nightly. So the cameras are scanning faces for terrorists but are put there to fight crime. Should all this make any sense?

You are seriously mistaken. The technology that these cameras are employing are absolutely no comparison to having Officer McFadden gazing down the street. The cameras currently in place use facial recognition software which is connected to an international "Watch List." The people on this "Watch List" is unknown and the qualifications for being put on the list are not published by the department of homeland security. In fact, you could be on that list. The violation of Civil Liberties arises because there is no guarantee that the government won't use these cameras to quell legitimate political opposition to the current administration. The founders of this country didn't trust the government, so why do you?

Kudos to Cameras - 2008-07-15 15:49:15
The comments on here reflect a sad degree of laziness on the part of the citizenry to understand their rights. These cameras do not violate civil liberties in any way, shape or form. One does not have a reasonable expectation of privacy when in a public setting.
Would those opposed to these cameras also oppose a police officer looking in their direction while he walks the beat, while they're in public? If not, then what is the difference with an officer using remote viewing technology to look in your direction (again, while you?re in public), besides the fact that your tax dollars are being saved by requiring fewer officers to canvas an area on foot or car patrol?
If any of these complainers are genuinely concerned about their civil liberties, such as being wrongly charged with a crime, then you would think that they would jump at the chance to have a video record to use as a defense against the government's improper charge.
I suspect that the strong opposition to cameras by some is simply an extension of the self-indulgent selfishness that many seem to increasingly possess. They want to do what they want, whenever they want, but God help the person who interferes with or even bothers to look the wrong way at them. The idea of give and take, of making room for others to safely enjoy their day as you enjoy yours, is apparently lost on these folks. As a prime example, one commentator here mentioned how he will seek to do his small part to financially sabotage the private businesses he allegedly patronizes, even though these businesses probably have nothing to do with the cameras. What a sad example of mindless lashing out by someone who has conferred on himself rights which do not and ought not exist.

Please tell me exaclty how this violates any civil liberties? Do not make this out to be more than it is. Police cameras watching a public place. What is the difference between that and cops walking the same path? Crime is getting crazy in Annapolis. Why not help the police fix it?

Home of the cowardly - 2008-07-14 13:16:19
The USA is now truly the home of the cowardly and land of the watched. Does anyone really believe a few cameras would stop someone parking a truck-bomb downtown? More to the point, does anyone actually think that our provincial little backwater is on some terrorist's hit list? Get a grip! The current administration and the Department of Homeland Security are the worst sort of fear mongers. They seek to frighten, spy on, and control the populace for political gain. It reminds me of the tactics used by some infamous politicians in Europe about 60 years ago. This neo-con administrations is far more frightening than what they claim to protect us from.

Another Bad Move - 2008-07-14 09:09:59
This is yet another bad move in Annapolis. I'm already sick and tired of the Annapolis government taking over the city. I can't park downtown. Have to pay high taxes. Have to pay for someone elses sidewalks. Now I'm being watched 24/7. I also will stop shopping and eating downtown. Add another $2000 of lost sales to the above comment by R. Black.

Those who give up liberty - 2008-07-13 21:20:42
"They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety." Mr. Smith, it does NOT matter if you are law abiding or not, these cameras infringe our civil liberties. While Mr. Smith might enjoy being the subject of police voyeurism, I certainly do not. Consequently, there will be one less person who shops or dines in downtown Annapolis from now on. (For the record, I probably spend roughly $300-$500 a year in downtown Annapolis. You might scoff at that sum, but that is $300-500 less for Annapolis merchants who probably operate on very thin margins.)
