QA deputies assaulted in bar brawl; 6 arrested

Published 08/20/08

Two sheriff's deputies found themselves in the middle of a bar brawl Sunday morning after a fight erupted at a Grasonville bar, eventually shocking three men with a Taser and arresting six people for disorderly conduct.

The fight began shortly after 1:30 a.m. in the men's bathroom at The Jetty on Wells Cove Road when someone made a lewd comment to a woman who was allegedly in a bathroom stall with Wayne Waters, 27, of Centreville, said Lt. Dale Patrick, a Queen Anne's County Sheriff's Department spokesman.

Mr. Waters apparently blamed 22-year-old Stewart Godlewski Jr. of Preston, Caroline County, for the mean words, and fight ensued.

The fight appeared to have settled down when deputies arrived.

"A security guard had handled it inside," Lt. Patrick said.

According to the report Mr. Waters was standing outside The Jetty and Mr. Godlewski was inside the bar when deputies arrived,

But as Deputy Eric Goodman was speaking to a security officer about the brawl, a second fight broke out.

Deputies said Mr. Waters' sister, Margaret Waters, 25, lunged at Mr. Godlewski as he was walking out of The Jetty.

The woman threw punches and squirmed as Deputy Goodman and the security guard tried to hold her back. Meanwhile, Stewart John Godlewski Sr., 54, held back the younger Mr. Godlewski, according to the report.

By that point, a crowd of about 100 people had spilled from the bar to the parking lot to watch, Lt. Patrick said.

"Apparently, it was a pretty big crowd," he said.

Seven deputies and Maryland State Police, who'd been called for backup, spread out in the parking lot, asking watchers to leave and calm down.

Just as deputies were getting the crowd under control, they said a man ran into Deputy Larry Steenken. The fight started up for a third time, and several people began throwing punches at each other.

To gain control, the deputies said they shocked both Godlewski men and Dermah Travar Wright, 27, of Ridgely - who was identified as the man who prompted the third fight - with Tasers, Lt. Patrick said.

Both Godlewski men were arrested and charged with disorderly conduct. Mr. Wright was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, and failure to obey law enforcement.

With the three men in handcuffs, the deputies went searching for Ms. Waters, who they said started the second round of fighting. While they searched, they said Mr. Waters began cursing at them, causing another crowd to form around the deputies.

As the deputies were arresting Mr. Waters for disorderly conduct, they said the man fought back. A second man jumped in, pushing and punching at Deputy Goodman, Lt. Patrick said. Backup deputies forced that man to the ground and locked his hands behind his back with handcuffs.

The man, Albert Russell Steele, 22, of Stevensville was charged with second-degree assault, disorderly conduct, failure to obey an officer, resisting arrest, and obstructing and hindering law enforcement officers.

Mr. Waters was charged with disorderly conduct, failure to obey, and resisting arrest.

His sister also was arrested, and charged with second-degree assault and disorderly conduct.

All six were released later that day on their own recognizance, Lt. Patrick said.
