A joint legislative committee yesterday asked the state's top emergency medical doctor to look at whether reducing the number of Maryland State Police medevac helicopters would weaken the trauma care system. During a wide-ranging hearing focused on rising medical costs, Del. Dan K. Morhaim, himself an emergency physician and co-chairman of the Joint Committee on Health Care Delivery and Financing, asked Dr. Robert Bass, executive director of the Maryland Institute for Emergency Medical Services Systems, to consider reducing from 12 to 10 the number of new helicopters the state is looking to buy.
