The 19 towers that once dominated the mouth of the Severn River and the Annapolis skyline dwindled to three after the facility was mothballed by the 1993 Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission.
But the wind still is there. And now a state delegate and energy company are teaming up in an attempt to bring the future of energy generation to the former Naval Radio Transmitter...

Windmills of Waste - 2008-12-01 14:01:25
In truth, no money will be saved. The wind only blows part time while the need for dependable electricity is full time. The same amount of fossil fuel (primarily coal) will be consumed every day because the base electrical demand must always be met at a moments notice 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Coal fired generators will continue to spin and consume coal and require maintenance. Therefore, these proposed windmills may sound good, but they will actually add to the cost of electricity for Maryland residents. Solar and wind are not the answer to today's urban energy needs, they are simply a boondoggle.

Peter.. - 2008-09-18 12:02:47
So according to the finances you brought up, because it would take a few years to pay back the cost of the wind turbines, we shouldn't do it? How much does it cost to set up an oil pipeline? How much does it cost for an offshore oil rig? And lets not even bring up the savings in environmental damage of a coal burning power plant vs. a wind turbine... Any changes will cost more but the long term benefits are much better than not making the change in the first place. If these wind turbines are built, I do think we will be starting something new. I think it will spark other green technologies to be utilized as well as more wind generators to be erected. Everything costs, this is definitely worth the cost in my opinion.

Math on return is off - 2008-09-18 11:42:30
Where did someone get $1.2M? If it serves 3,000 to 6,000 homes. Using a very conservative $150 per home per month, which will rise in the coming years, that produces a most conservative $450,000 per month. A more realistic assessment based on the facts presented in the article, would be 4500 homes at $175 per month produces $787,500 per month. With 12 months in a year, that's a payback of $9.5M a year. That puts this project on a 3-4 year payback. On an environmental issue like this, something to give serious consideration. How much did the State blow on oysters?

Land use - 2008-09-18 07:12:33
Peter D. The land, as far as I know, is owned/controlled by the Navel Academy and is currently considered a preserve. There are allot of things to consider in such a project such as where is the money coming from. Who will control them, who gets the benefit...exc..exc. I for one would be against it if BGE has anything to do with its operation. There are some other things about the area as well. Historically It was the sight of the first settlement in the area as well as the sight of the first navel air station. It would definitely be a good place for wind generation but its not going to happen over night and I for one would like to see it but only after other more pressing concerns are dealt with. For starters the bay bridge is in serious need of expansion/replacement and that could cost in the billions and wind generators won?t solve the traffic problems in the area

since this is a Republican initiative, bull dog Miller and the corruption crew will deny it. Then 5 years down the road will send it to a public vote and make it part of Maryland's Constitution.

Do it! Do it... DO IT! - 2008-09-17 11:12:44
It is about time to start placing renewable energy around the country. Why not be a leader and pioneer city to bring this energy to our state? We need to work towards NOT using oil products and be predominately green technologies. A start somewhere is still a START!

That would be great, but I don't think the County owns that land, or any land at Greenbury Point, There was an article a while back about the County only own those towers, and they lease the land from the US Navy. Time will tell.

A bond issued by the county and repaid by BGE would make sense. AA County has a high bond rating-low interest. Alternatively, probably more politically doable is to have the county own it and lease the land to BGE. AA County pols would get a lot more credit for being progressive on this issue.

Consider This - 2008-09-16 10:40:51
If turbines are constructed, who is paying the bill?? Will it be County..State? Will the cost be passed on the tax payers. Or more than likely, since State or County doesn?t have an extra 30 million, it will be privatized between BGE and the company promoting this, how do you think they will recover the costs, and in the end, who recoups the benefits? I think it is a great idea, but I think the public needs a lot more information and questions answered.

great idea - 2008-09-16 06:53:04
This is truely a great idea. And compliments to Del. Ron George for bringing it to the table. My only hope is the "not in my back yard" crowd stays out of the picture. One question: who benefits from the new energy? Does it go back in the grid and maybe lower our energy cost? or is it going to the Navy?

The Navy is using just 4 turbines to save $1.2 Million in Cuba. If they raise 8 at Greenburry Point would'nt that add up to $2.4 Million a year in savings? I think this a great start to a LONG TERM solution for our energy needs.

Keep Thinking - 2008-09-15 09:46:25
Keep thinking...this should have been done 30 years AGO. Now we're freaking out because we're watching the price of gas go up again after a storm rolls through the Gulf. Keep thinking and also don't complain that you're paying astronomical gas prices along with utilities through the roof. Too bad it takes a crisis to get the brain juices flowing to solve it...but it may be too late...

Think about it. - 2008-09-15 09:10:05
If this project costs 30 to 40 million, not including upkeep and managing, and will only save about 1.2 million a year, that would take over 30 years to actually realize any savings. This needs more thought.

do this, do it now...... - 2008-09-15 07:26:22
This sounds great! However, since this is gov. property, you better get started before red tape gets in the way,or, an enviromental group steps in saying that it will look bad. I grew up in Annapolis and remember all the towers on Greenbury Pt. Windmills would be wellcome, this would be a start in the right direction, to lower energy bills. Good luck.

:) Delightful News - 2008-09-14 18:41:34
Just as gas prices start to fall slightly and we felt like there might be hope along comes Ike and causes them to spike to an all time high. Families everywhere are wondering where else they can cut back to cover the cost of fueling up the family vehicle to get back and forth to work and take care of the necessities of life. There is no money left for relaxation and family fun. The stress level continues to rise. Most areas of the country have seen a sharp rise in their electric bill as power companies pass their increased production costs on to consumers. The price of a gallon of milk is almost as precious as a gallon of gas. The cost of every consumer product has risen sharply. Americans are stretched to the limit. Jobs are being lost, foreclosures are increasing at an alarming rate. Seems even the family pets are suffering the high cost of fuel as almost daily a sad new story is on TV about shelters being forced to euthanize record number of surrendered pets from those forced out of their homes due to foreclosure or they simply can't afford to feed them anymore. The energy crisis in our country is far reaching and needs immediate attention. Our economy is in a sorry state of affairs directly related to the high cost of fuel. We have become so dependant on foreign oil that we have neglected to fully utilize such natural sources of energy such wind power & solar power. Along with modern technology such as plug in cars, hybrid cars, v2g technology ,and regenerative braking, technology we still seem to be floundering as a nation as to devising the best plan utilize all that is available to us and lift ourselves out of this mess we are in. We need to take our closest look at which candidates put our economy and energy crisis at the forefront of their agenda. The Manhattan Project of 2009 by Jeff Wilson pretty much says it all...
