County food banks facing bare shelvesPublished 10/19/08
Workers at food pantries across the county are saying they've never seen the shelves so bare and so many families desperate for help putting food on the table.

Despite the efforts of dedicated helpers like Pack 994 of the Webelos, food and grants are becoming more scarce at the Anne Arundel County Food and Resource Bank. With the bad economy and winter coming, officials are concerned about keeping the needy fed in the coming months.One shelter in north county made an executive decision last week to no longer stock meat products because they are so expensive. Ground beef and hot dogs are a thing of the past, said Marsha Frazier, president of North County Emergency Outreach Network. The associate director of a shelter in south county said 63 percent of the clients they served in September were using the pantry's services for the first time. And St. James' Parish's pantry...
